Rubbish trial date set
Four thousand ■ Christchurch homes have been selected for the city’s first trial in recovering recyclable rubbish under council control. A recommendation to the Christchurch City Council, approved by its works and traffic committee yesterday, will see the start of the “sort at source” trial in the first week of September. Cr Newton Dodge, chairman of the committee, said that four districts had been chosen for the trial — Rowley, Sumner, Wai-noni-Avondale, and Mai-rehau-St Albans — and that about 1000 homes in each area would be asked to participate in the trial. To enable the trial to get under way, the council will be asked to accept a contract with the Taua Mahi Trust which will collect and sort the recyclable products in the trial districts. Cr Dodge said that con-
sideration was also being given to the possibility of an area being set aside at the Bexley tip for domestic and commercial recyclable rubbish to ba left free of any tipping charge. It had also been suggested that charges for dumping fion-recydable rubbish be raised to cover the greater costs incurred in disposing of, or covering, this type of rubbish, but this was still under consideration, Cr Dodge said. Publicity about the trial, and information on it for householders, was now being prepared, and it was likely that council supervision of the trial would be maintained by a former council officer, he said. It is also planned to renew the suburban rub-bish-collection scheme late in September, depending on the availability of the large bins to which residents can take household refuse.
