See & Sew

By

Butterick

This is certainly fashion made easy. One of the 112 patterns in the “See and

Sew” section of Butterick’s new catalogue, the softly-draped dress, on the left, pattern number 5830, has only four basic pattern pieces. It has been designed to save you money and time. The patterns in the “See and Sew” section cost a mere

99 cents, and as far as time goes, this dress has two side and two centre seams, and that’s it. The wide funnel collar allows the dress to be slipped easily on and off. No additional neck opening is needed. And because of the loose line of the dress, brought in at the waist with a self tie, there is no waist opening. Openings are one of the details that take time in homedressmaking. With these phased out, you have a very easy-to-make garment. In ail the “See and Sew” designs. Butterick have concentrated on similar short cuts. There are easily-adjustable wraparound skirts, wide necklines with tie-collars and thread-through cords, and broad self-tie sashes that create an instant waistline. This versatile betweenseasons gown has been specially designed for moderate stretch knit fabrics. Mr M. C. Clements, fabric buyer for Beaths, suggests these fabrics as being suitable for this Butterick model — a 40 per cent lambswool and 60 per cent polyester knit, in a soft light-weight fabric in eight plain colours; a 100 per cent polyester fabric with a silky feel that comes in full florals or plain boucles; and a most practical wool and trevira mix crisp and uncrushable, which is available in plain, striped and herringbone patterns in muted browns and greens.

Fitted and flared in the right places, the dress has built-in side pockets, and is below mid-knee hem length. All “See and Sew” patterns come in petite, small, medium and large, i.e. 78 -102 cm bust size, and this dress requires 4.50 -5.40 m of 115 cm fabric, or 3.00 -3.10 m of 150 cm-fabric. The pattern

is suitable for fabrics with nap, shading, pile or oneway design. Polyester thread should be used.
