Miners shape up for fight
NZPA-Reuter Torquay I The British Government’s i plans for a tough, new 1 wages policy have received a curt rebuff from the powerful Coal Miners’ Union, The union’s president (Mr Joe Gormley) said that it would not tolerate continued Government interference in the pay bargaining process. “We will not be frustrated in the next round of wage negotiations,” he told the union’s annual conference in Torquay. The Labour Government wants to impose limitations on salary increases for the fourth successive year. Last Friday, the Prime Minister (Mr James Callaghan) acknowledged there may be “cries of anguish” when the new wages policy is publish’ ed shortly.
To keep inflation down, the Government hopes to restrict wage increases to way below 10 per cent.
