'Catch’in new clause

PA Auckland The foetal abnormality clause which was narrowly passed in Parliament yesterday has a catch to it, according to Dr J. Woolnough, the Values Party candidate for Tamaki. Dr Woolnough was acquitted on 12 counts of performing unlawful abortions at the Auckland Medical Aid Centre in 1975. “Tests for foetal abnormality have to be carried out as late as possible in the pregnancy,” said Dr Woolnough. “If there are indications that there is an abnormality, and an abortion is required, there will not be much time because abortions have to be carried out as early as possible in a pregnancy,” he said. Dr Woolnough said there would be only one or two weeks in which to certify the need for an abortion and to carry it out. “It could be insufficient time,” he said.
