Weather upsets ’Press’ chess
Only six results from the 13 matches scheduled for the third round of “The Press’’ schools’ chess competition last week, have been received. , ~ The weather undoubtedly affected many of the arranged matches, but it would be appreciated if the schools involved could complete their matches as soon as possible to avoid a backlog. The two Christchurch teams continued on their unbeaten way, although Burnside, fourth last year, won one game and drew another against the strong Christchurch B team. It should go close to finishing among the top four again. The B grade competition is producing some close contests, two of the four matches from the third round ending in draws. The two qualifiers from each zone for
the final play-off will be worthy representatives. Cobham Intermediate had its second successive draw when it tied, 3-all, against Burnside B, and Heaton, run-ner-up last year, was restricted to a draw by Hillmorton. Branston Intermediate has managed just two wins in its two matches to date, and both have been recorded by its second-board player, Darryl Sutton. T h i r d-round results were:— A grade — Christchurch A 6, St Bede’s 0; Christchurch B 4|, Burnside I|. B grade.— Zone I; St Andrew’s 31, Christ’s College B 21; Burnside B 3, Cobham 3. Zone II: Heaton 3, Hillmorton 3; Papanui 5, Branston 1- . , , . Burnside A and Shirley A drew their A grade secondround contest.
