Although most were far from flash, their sale was followed by a keen gallery and the market for any ewes with good mouths lifted by up to $3 a head. Perhaps the feature of the (sale was a pen of Corriedale I ewes with Down-cross lambs at foot selling at $8.60, all counted. At the least it proved there is solid optimism about the prospects for the new season. One of the main lines of ewes was some advertised halfbreds, due in spring, to Down rams. The main line, in the four and six-tooth range, sold at $16.20 which compared with recent markets, this was an exceptional sale. Four and six-tooth Corriedale ewes, offered as capital stock, realised $15.60, and lighter-framed ewes in the same line, $12.70. A yarding of about 1000 store lambs generally had an easier sale. The top wether lambs, which have been fetching up to $l2, realised $ll or sometimes a little more. Wether lambs sold steadily at $9 to $lO, with smaller lambs down to $7. Full-woolled Corriedale ewe lambs topped the section at $15.70. Sales of breeding ewes included:—

J, R. B. Menzies (Hawarden), 269 two and threeshear halfbreds mated to Down rams at $16.20, 148 mixed-aged halfbreds at $14.40. Store cattle For a July sale, the store cattle sale was particularly good for vendors. The yarding of 710 head included a good selection of rising two-year-old Angus steers, and they had an excellent sale. One line of tussock steers from Waikari were conservatively $lO to $l2 above recent rates. The top pen fetched $l6l, and the estimated average was more than $l3O. Most were sold to an Oamaru buyer. However, there were again frequent sales of medium steers at $llO to $l2O, with si .aller cattle down to $BO. Twenty-month-old heifers sold mainly at $6O to $9O. There was a notable sale of Hereford breeding cows at $l7O, and they were reported to have been sold to go back into a breeding herd. Other store cows sold at $BO to $9B. A fairly big gallery followed the sale. It was evident that the rise in the beef market has generated re-

newed interest, for a wider range of buyers. Sales of store cattle included: —

Steers. — Sandhurst (Weka Pass), 151 rising two-year-old Angus and Anguscross at $ll6 to $161; H. Cunningham (Weka Pass), 16 Herefords at $129; D. O. Digby (Ashburton), 11 adult Herefords at $140; H. C. UrIwin (Oxford), 26 Herefords at $93 to $165; Marble Point Station (Hanmer Springs), 5 Herefords at $l5O. Cows. — A. W. and C. F. Urquhart (Erewhon), 53 mated Herefords at $Bl to $l7O. Calves. — Charles Waters (Amberley), 5 Simmentalcross steers at $100; F. N. and P. N. Buttle (Hororata). 26 Cha rolaisscross steers at $56 to $6B. Dairy cattle Only four dairy cattle were offered, and there were no high prices. The best of the heifers sold to $l5O and the plain end of the offering, $96. Vealers The veal section drew a yarding of only 154 head, but the market was weaker in the first half. However, it showed renewed life later, when rates were comparable with last week. Medium vealers made up most of the entry, but there was a useful entry of wellfinished heavier weights. The best of these sold to $l3O. Otherwise, good average veal sold at ? :t ’ r m '■> early stages, to $lOO, with lightweights down io ~?u. On estimated dressed weight, much of the veal was fetching 60c to 64c per kg. Fat pigs

A medium yarding of fat pigs had a firm sale. Quality, however, was better than usual, the yarding including a good proportion of light to heavy-weignt baconers. A reduced yarding of choppers sold in line with recent rates. Good pigs again reached or bettered $5O. Values: — Light porkers $37 to $4l. Medium and heavy porkers, $42 to $4B. Light and medium baconers, $4B to $53. Heavy baconers, $54 to $6O, with odd sales to $64.50. Choppers, good, to $55. Store pigs A small yarding of store pigs had a firm sale. The yarding was mainly large slips and stores with very few weaners. Local buyers provided most competition. There were no quotable sales of breeding stock. Values:— Small weaners, $lO to $l3. Good weaners, $l4 to $l7. Slips, $lB to $22. Small and medium stores, $23 to $2B. Large stores, $29 to $32.
