Journalists pay talks to resume
PA Wellington The 900 striking members of the New Zealand Journalists’ Union returned to work yesterday afternoon after agreement with employers to resume wage talks in conciliation.
The stoppage began at 3 a.m. on Friday, the union having announced that it would last seven days unless there was a change
of attitude by the employers. The first news of the move to resume talks came on Sunday evening from the executive director of the Newspaper Publishers’ Association (Mr M. Thompson). The journalists, who earlier voted three to one in favour of direct action if necessary, yesterday
agreed to resume normal work after hearing their officials report on talks with the employers about a return to conciliation. “We hope to be in a position to release the full text of our agreement within 24 hours, but we will not do this without prior consultation with the N.Z.J.U.,” Mr Thompson said.
