Freezer wage claim cut 40 p.c.
Meat workers reduced their wage claim 40 per cent during the first day of national award talks in Christchurch yesterday. The Meat Workers’ Union set out to seek an increase of 20 per cent across the board, but yesterday reduced this to 12 per cent. According to the union’s secretary (Mr A. J. Kennedy), the new figure is a modest one.
“We hope the whole thing can be settled by the start of tne new killing season, and we expect the employers to take note that we have reduced our claim to such a modest figure,” he said. The union also wants the 7 per cent cost-of-living adjustment, which has already been paid, to be written into the award. Mr Kennedy said that most other awards allowed for this. If it was not written in, he said, it would not be taken into account when calculating penal rates. He said the employers were to consider the offer last evening.
