River-litter penalty
Waimairi County resi- • dent, Mr D. J. Scott, of Fendalton Road has suggested that the penalty for dumping litter into the Avon Rive; be increased from $4O to $2OOO.
• Mr Scott proposed to a (meeting of the county’s •works, reserves, and traffic (committee last evening that I a special board of control would be the only effective long-term solution to the problem. The law now prescribes a maximum fine of $2OOO for dumping certain materials into the river, such as dangerous pesticides, oil, sawdust. and sheep dip. Mr Scott would like to see garden refuse, lawn clippings, beer cans, bottles, and other litter added to that list.
