Discharged before trial

PA Greymouth A Christchurch man who appeared for trial in the Supreme Court, at Greymouth yesterday on a charge of arson was discharged by Mr Justice Jeffries before the hearing started. Robert Bruce Rennie, aged 20, a glass sorter, pleaded not guilty in Christchurch earlier this year to a charge of committing arson at the premises of Reefton Motors, Reefton, on February 18, and to burgling the premises, which were severely damaged by fire and later demolished. He was committed for trial, but yesterday morning defence counsel (Mr N. G. Hampton) filed a motion for dismissal on the ground that there was insufficient evidence on which to proceed with a trial. The motion was heard in chambers, and subsequently his Honour allowed it and discharged Rennie.
