Big balloon
A University of Canter* bury researcher, Mr N. Tapper, has built a big balloon to measure air pollution and variations in the urban climate in Christchurch. The Health Department is assisting Mr Tapper in his research, which ht is doing for a Ph.D. thesis. The balloon is cigar shaped, filled with helium, and 5.4 m long. As it ascends to a maximum height of 500 m, it draws air through a plastic tube,
This is sucked down to ground level by a pump, and the samples are collected and analysed, The balloon is tethered to the ground throughout the measurement which takes about an hour, Samples are also collected at upper levels by filter papers in the plastic tube. Mr Tapper will begin his research work this week, and continue it until the summer.
