Prices of bread, canned food, up
The price of many varieties of bread and canned foods increased yesterday. "It is about time somebody canned Wattie’s,” said a campaigner for the Housewives’ Boycott Movement (Mrs K. Himiona) when she heard that most Watties canned foods would cost more.
"We get these prices put on us with no excuses,” she said. The Department of Trade and Industry, which approved the increases, did not have to justify its actions to the public, either. Even now, many families could not afford to buy canned foods, she said.
All canned vegetables, soups, fish, meat, pet food, baby foods, baked beans, spaghetti and tomato sauces produced by Wattie’s will cost more when old stocks have been exhausted. The price of Oak jams has also increased. However, Wattie’s canned fruits will not be affected, as the prices of these went up last month.
Many varieties of bread increased by 1c yesterday. These included Nu-soy, sandwich, and Procera loaves baked by Boons, and cut and uncut sandwich, brown, and white Procera and toaster loaves and com bread baked by Stacey and Hawker.
