No solution in sight to oil tanker crisis

The 20,000-tonne tanker Torm Rask is due at Lyttel-1 ton from sea on Thursday; for a first call, and with an 11.28 m draught requirement, to discharge 18,000 tonnes of I oil to enable her to enter !Wellington, her next port of; call. The 171 m Torm Rask is! a deep-water tanker in the real sense of the word, al-1 though the Lyttelton Har-; bourmaster (Captain J. A Barbour) does not anticipate I problems handling her. Her arrival on the New Zealand coast comes at a time when there is world-1 wide attention on the future [ of tankers. The story of the tanker [ over less than a decade is said to reflect the general, future of shipping serving the smaller maritime nations, such as New Zealand. j In the years before 1973,' Ithe growing demand for oil increased the world's tanker fleet to ships of up to 500.000-tons deadweight. Capacity increased from :25M gross tons a year in 1970 to about 35M in 1977,1 with a further planned expansion to 50M gross tonnes .this year. ' But the growth developed!

: into a surplus of tankers, jand brought about a programme of slow steaming, to conserve fuel, and an accelerated scrapping of old ton nage. In July, 1976 most of the very big tankers were less than five years old and only 16 per cent of th 'world’s tanker fleet was 15 years old or more. i This has brought about a vexed question for those involved in future ship planning, in an era Of energy crisis. The flow-on affect on New Zealand shipping remains tc ibe seen. ARRIVALS ! Coastal Trader <7.19 a.m ; Auckland. DEPARTURES Coastal Trader <5.10 p.m.i ' Dunedin Tongariro <9.30 p.m.i. 6233. fo.
