Loans for solar water heating welcomed
The announcement of Government interest-free loans for approved solar water heating systems has been welcomed by the New Zealand Solar Equipment Manufacturers’ Association.
The recent Budgetary measure would enable more New Zealand families to take advantage of one of the few free forms of energy available to help meet their water heating needs, said the association's executive officer, Mr S. J. Atkins. Mr Atkins said that for any such scheme to work adequately, safeguards must be established not only to protect the consumer, installation contractor and the manufacturer, but also to ensure that the taxpayer, who would finance the loan scheme, was getting a “good deal" in terms of savings out of "all-too-fi-nite” supplies of non-re-newable energy resources. It is expected that the scheme, which will enable householders to borrow up to $5OO interest free with a pay back period of four years, will start in about two months.
