Two killed on the roads
Greymouth A youth died in the Greymouth Hospital on Saturday morning from head injuries suffered in a road accident on the Main South highway at South Beach, late on Friday evening. He was
Grahame Panther, aged 20,
of Paroa. The light truck he was driving slid sideways into a pole when travelling south about 11 p.m. Mr Panther was alone in the vehicle, which snapped the pole about 10ft from the ground, just ahead of the driver’s door, trapping Mr Panther inside.
It took 45 minutes, using Jaws of Life equipment, to extricate him from the vehicle.
Mr Panther was a member of the Blaketown Rugby Club playing as hooker in the junior side, and repre-
sented West Coast against Buller in that position on June 24.
A Whangarei motor-cyclist had died in the Palmerston North Hospital as a result of a collision between his machine and a car on Friday. His pillion passenger is reported seriously ill in hospital.
The dead man and his passenger have not yet been named.
