Linwood faces challenge

Linwood might face a hard fight to retain its lead in the A grade inter-club table tennis championship even though it beat a weakened Selwyn, 9-3, at the Selwyn Street Hall on I Wednesday evening. With Ling Nan Ming absent from its ranks, Linwood has lost a key player, making the results of matches in the next few weeks not as certain as they might have been. Michael Hamel steered Linwood to victory on Wednesday with three singles wins. Linwood also won the three doubles matches. Avonside I beat University, 9-3, and lost only one singles match: Les Stewart being beaten by Yee Chow Boi. Maurice Burrowes and Wayne Adamson kept their impressive records intact but Harry Redmond lost all his matches, his first really bad round of the season. Avonside 111 had its fourth consecutive win. 8-4. over Avonside 11. Most of Avonside Il’s problems stemmed from the poor singles form of its players. Jan Morris, John Richards, and Mark Clasper w-on only one match each while Mike Warren and Martin Kelly gave fine displays to win a total of five matches collectively. Riccarton II beat Avonside IV, 8-3. the most impressive player being Simon Cairns, the promising Otago junior, who played for Avonside. He w-on two matches, against John and Alastair Armstrong, and took Stuart Armstrong to three games.
