Jaks lead basketball

The Canterbury Basketball Association’s local men’s competition continued on Saturday. Competition points now stand at: Jaks-H.5.0.8., 20; Checkers A, 18; Mairehau A, 16; Y.M.C.A. A, Burnside A, and Aranui, 4 each; University A, nil. Jaks 74, YJW.C.A. 55 Jaks Old Boys started the match badly and all credit went to Y.M.C.A. for taking the initiative. An upset seemed likely. Jaks snatched back the lead, 26-25, just before half-time. This game saw the return to basketball of the Jaks captain, Ed Manco, who has been out for several months because of a motor-cycle accident. In the second half Y.M.C.A. had some good play from its young players, Peter Kuipers ahd Andy Miller, and went ahead, 3530, after five minutes. Jaks’ superiority finally started to tell and the coach, Tim Guthrie, set up play well: 40-38 after nine minutes, 51-44 after 13 minutes, 57-50 after 15 minutes, and 63-53 in the seventeenth minute. Jaks took control in the final three minutes slotting in an amazing 13 points. John Hill began to find the form he showed in recent matches for New Zealand. Jaks-HSOB 74 (J. Hill 16, T. Guthrie 13, S. Ferguson 12, M. Ruscoe 12, J. Whelan 10, D. Usmar 7, E. Manco 4) beat Y.M.C.A. 55, (H. Dimock 15, T. Newman 9, M. Turner 8, P. Kuipers 6, L. Dixon 5, B. Manthei 4, G. Magon 4, A. Miller 4). Mairehau A, 79, Aranui 61 Aranui Old Boys, one of the most improved teams in the senior competition gave Mairehau a good run for its money and held Mairehau to 41 points to 37 at half-time. Mairehau started the second half with great purpose, scoring 10 baskets (20 points) to Aranui’s three (six points) and went quickly to 61-45 in the tenth minute. Aranui rallied but could not make any more headway. Mike Seaward, for Mairehau, was limited to 12 points and Marty Belcher scored 19.
