School bound or snow-bound

Sir. — This morning we woke to a whitened world. T left home as usual at 7 a.m. to walk down the hill to the bus in 2in of snow. Having made sure by listening to the radio that school was as usual my eldest son and daughter left and had a great time on the way. snow falling and enjoying the unfamiliar landscape. When they arrived at school my son found he was one of seven in his class (form 1/2) who had turned up. my daughter’s class (Std 4) was only half complete. They came home in the afternoon to find many of their friends had spent the day “ski-ing,” building snowmen, etc. Surely this type of behaviour leads to absenteeism in later years — taking a day off for the races, football, or other types of “sickie.” Or is it good training to make the “most” of whatever comes your way? — Yours, etc., D. F. FAULKNER. June 29. 1978.
