Biggest party in Monaco for 22 years

NZPA-Reuter

Monte Carlo

Princess Caroline of Monaco and Mr Philippe Junot are on a secret honeymoon after Monaco s biggest party for 22 years ended in a news blackout on the couple’s whereabouts.

The bride and groom, married at a Roman catholic ceremony in the Grimaldi Royal Palace yesterday, were ex. -cted to leave the principality after a lunch for Hollywood film stars, relatives and a few of Monaco s citizens. On Thursday they were married in a civil ceremoney. But spokesmen for the family would neither deny nor confirm that they had left following the most opulent festivities seen here since Prince Rainier married Grace Kelly in 1956.

Most people thought they would board the luxury yacht Prince Rainier and Princess Grace gave them as a wedding bresent and head off on a Mediterranean cruise. The vacht was believed anchored off the Spanish is-

land of Ibiza. It was absent from the fleet 6f luxury cruisers moored in Monte Carlo’s harbour yesterday.

Princess Caroline, 21, and her 38-year-old French business consultant husband made their first public appearance yesterday when they walked through the streets of old Monte Carlo after their religious wedding. The couple were greeted by cheers and applause from thousands. Present at the wedding were some of Princess Grace’s Hollywood friends — Ava Gardner. Frank Sinatra, and Gregory Peck. Princess Caroline, aged 21, wore a white organdy dress and veil by Marc Bohan of the Dior Fashion House, while Mr Junot, aged 38, was dressed in tails and a grey top hat.
