Ashburton Shell match?
One of Canterbury’s early Shell cricket matches this season will almost certainly be played at Ashburton as part of the borough's centennial celebrations. Improvements will have to be made to the grounds but I the Canterbury Cricket Association is keen to let the Ash- [ burton association host the [game. [ The likely match for Ash1 burton is the one aaginst [Otago on December 22. 23. ■and 24. It could also be an earlier fixture against Central Districts on December 15. 16. and 17. I Hosting the final of the [Shell Trophj has become a I costly business. In the three | years existence of the trophy j losses have been incurred on | each final. [ Last season was the biggest. with the Canterbury association losing $3484. The Canterbury association will ask the New Zealand Cricket Council for assistance and recommend that the trophy final be played closer Ito the end of the second i round than previously. It will be suggested to the council that the final be given priority over matches invoL ving visiting teams.
