C.A.R.P. lists price rises for May
Price rises in grocery items last May numbered 120, bringing this year’s total number of grocery price rises to 780 in only I five months, according to the latest Campaign Against Rising Prices monthly price-rise index. Mrs C. Kelly, secretary of C.A.R.P. in Wellington said the consumers price index for last month showed a rise of 11.7 per cent on the figure for May, 1977. “Figures for the years under the previous Govrnment showed an average annual increase in food prices of 13.3 per cent,” she said. “Conjparable figures j under ■ this Government, s from December, 1975, to December, 1977 show an ’ average annual increase of almost 17 per cent. • rise of 12.7 per cent under Labour and of 15.5 per ■ cent under National, Mrs Kelly said. “the household operations group of the consumers price index has risen at more than twice the rate annually under National and it did under Labour, Mrs Kelly said. Price rises for May in items recorded by C.A.R.P. showed particularly noticeable increases in non-food items, she said. In May, rose hip syrup was up by 32 per cent; apricot halves were up by 23 per cent; dog biscuits were up 18 per cent; starch powder was up 17 per cent; skim-milk powder rose by 14 per cent; and Bioluvil and Freshup i apple and orange juice : were up by 10 per cent.
