Objectives and principles of good pruning
The following hints on top fruit pruning list briefly the main obectives and principles behind this seasonal opera'ion. Pruning is applied to a greater or lesser extent to most fruii trees which are generally cultivated in our gardens.
The basics are the same, only the application tends to vary according to kind, variety, location, over-all development and type of growing system, and must be modified accordingly. Objectives: 1. Ter build a strong tree . ( capable of fully supporti' ing adequate and regular i: crops. 2. To shape the tree, to whatever system, so that it can receive maximum sunlight to all parts and ■ to facTititate ease of management. 3. To remove diseased, : dead or broken branches. ■ 4. To induce an ade- ; quate flow of replacemnt ■ growth. ! 5 To keep a balance be-
tween wood growth and crop production. 6. To restrict too vigorous a top growth and badly supported fruiting arms to manageable heights and reasonable proportion.
7. To rejuvenate the weak growing tree. Some qualifications to the above are added.
