Woman president Lincoln students

The Lincoln College ' Student’s Association will, from July I, have a woman ’ president for the first time. She is Miss Jan Atkinson, aged 20 (shown above), a third-year bachelor of agricultural commerce (economics) student, who is association secretary at present. She will take over from Mr Guy Macindoe, who stood for a six-month term. Miss Atkinson said she looked on the presidency as a challenge. She will head an association of 1440 students, of whom j 1183 are men and 257 are 1 women. More women are 1 enrolled at Lincoln College this year than ever before. The college has had a body to look after its students’ affairs for more than 90 years. The present Students’ Association was incorporated in 1948. The Students’ Association executive this year has women in the posts of treasurer, international affairs officer, and welfare officer. One main issue the asso-

ciation would consider during her term was whether it would withdraw from the New Zealand University Students’ Association, said Miss Atkinson, Twelve months notice of withdrawal was given in September; and a special general .meeting would ! have to be held before the August vacation to decide if Lincoln should go ahead with this. Miss Atkinson said she believed it would be to the association’s advantage to stay in the N.Z.U.S.A. : Students got a lot of benefits from the national association for the $2 levy they paid. After completing her education at St Margaret’s : College, Miss Atkinson took a secretarial course at the Christchurch Technical Institute. She then decided to study at Lincoln College because she ( had always been i terested “in the outdoor life.” Miss Atkinson said she had not decided what she would do when she left \ Lincoln College, although she would like to t avel. “I do not really know what lies ahead,” she said.
