More arts even though ‘Kaleidoscope’ pauses

From Owen Shaw Auckland “Kaleidoscope” has been shelved by SPTV for 13 weeks to make way for “Age of Uncertainty,” but this does not mean that arts programmes have stopped. The channel’s documentary unit has made six 10minute profiles of New Zealand painters, which

were to have been shown on “Kaleidoscope” but which will now be screened on Sunday nights. The artists are Mervyn Taylor, William Sutton, William J. Reed, Rita Angus, T. A. MacCormick and Eric Lee Johnson. The unit has made several documentaries for “Kaleidoscope” in the past and is now stockpiling a number of programmes. One of these is a documentary on Polynesian artefacts at the Auckland Museum, the narration by Hamish Keith. Rod Cornelius, head of information programmes for SPTV, said he would like to do a similar programme at the Canterbury Museum. He would also like to do a documentary on Katherine Mansfield, a “major effort, which would mean going to France.” Mr Cornelius said he hoped to do more New Zealand items for “Kalei-

doscope” but he was not interested in doing “littlemagazine features,” which gave viewers only a fleeting glimpse of a topic. It was better to spend money and tackle a major project.
