Sir, — lam glad that J. K. Flanagan is interested in more than so-called “moral absolutes.” The 1972 Gardner book is out of date at best. The 1977 Badgely report surveyed the workings of the Canadian abortion law for the Canadian Privy Council. Professor Badgely spoke at the Christchurch Clinical School earlier this year. He said that comprehensive surveys showed that complication rates were lowest for doctors who did the most abortions, and at university clinics, and were highest at general community hospitals which were often the most restrictive. He was not challenged by any New Zealand

evidence to the contrary. The New Zealand Royal Commission Report says (p 252 that information was received from Christchurch Women’s Hospital, but nothing was published although full details from the Auckland Clinic were given and showed the clinic had one of the
