Pupils meet Polish crew
Crew members from the Polish ship, Smolny, berthed at Lyttelton, are being entertained during their stay by pupils of Mairehau High School.
This morning several of the ship’s officers will speak at the school assembly, and see round the school. At 3.30 p.m. crew members will play soccer against the school’s First XI. Last Tuesday evening, six pupils of the third-form gen- , eral linguistics class, accompanied by their teacher, Mr D. S. Walker, visited the ship and had a meal on board. Mr Walker said he tried to make contact with most foreign ships visiting Lyttelton in order to give pupils a chance to meet people from other countries, and to try out phrases they had learnt in other languages.
