Drinking drivers

Sir,—Mr Quin's view (“The Press,” June 13) that vehicles involved in drunken driving charges should be impounded in all cases except when not lawfully in the possession of the driver has my strong support. Assess-

ment of the safeness of the driver entrusted with a vehicle is very properly the duty of the vehicle owner. Again, I agree strongly with his view of where rights and obligations of drivers should divide. Obligation to provide a sample of breath on demand should be absolute. The law has no call to concede to any person’s notion of rights to an alternative treatment. These are only first steps among more and larger ones towards beating the problem. Let us not be so decadent that we jib at even starting.—Your c , etc., ALEX WA I SON. June 14. 1978.
