Sheepmeat stance 'helpful’

PA Wellington j The Prime Minister (Mr Muldoon) believes the Brit-! ish Minister of Agriculture I (Mr Silkin) is taking a! “slightly more helpful” stance in New Zealand’s fight against a sheepmeat regulation in Europe. The proposed regulation, which would severely restrict i New Zealand’s access to tra-i ditional meat markets in Europe, is being discussed in Europe at present by the Deputy Prime Minister (Mr Taiboys).

Mr Muldoon told a press conference yesterday that Mr Silkin had told Mr Talboys he would like to see the whole thing dropped, adding that in certain circumstances it might not be possible to stop it. “The previous attitude of the Ministry of Agriculture in Britain was that it was inevitable and so that represents a significant change,” Mr Muldoon said.

Asked why Russia was not buying meat from New Zealand at present, Mr Muldoon said that he did not want to make any public comment at this stage.

But Mr Muldoon later added that he was expected an approach to come “at any time” and agreed with a questioner that sales had been “imminent” for some considerable time.
