Church ruling
NZPA Rome The Roman Catholic Church has begun a forceful campaign to prevent, or at least limit, the use of Italy's new law on abortion. Nuns and other members, of religious orders serving as! medical personnel will be I withdrawn from State and private hospitals performing: abortions under the new law,! which took effect five days! ago. Italian hospitals depend heavily on Roman Catholic nurses and doctors. Nearly 900 nuns work as nurses in the 72 private hospitals and clinics in Rome alone, and the city has 31 hospitals belonging to religious institutions. Physicians performing abortions and nurses and other medical staff participating in them have been told that they face excommunication from the Church.
