Burnside II wins squash

Burnside U cam* from behind ;to beat the club’s No. 1 team for the Blank Trophy when the last round in that senior inter-club squash competition was contested on Tuesday evening. The winner needed eight point* in its match against Burnside I and when Graham Foulds (Bumside II) lost to Chris Wasley in straight games it could not lose again that night. Robin Clements beat; Jamie Bu-hell by two points in the fifth game of a seesawing battle. Bushell won i the second. 10-8, after seeing! his 7-2 lead transformed into' a game ball against him at' 7-8, Clements won the third; after trailing. 2-8; and then 1 took the fifth after Bushell had two match balls. Bumside II went closer to victory when Geoff Tait overcame Stuart Hargreaves (a substitute for Harry Shepherd) in four, and all depended on the last match between the slight Stuart Davenport, aged 15, for Burnside II and the capable, experienced Neil Rush. Rush is ranked higher than Davenport but the extremely cold courts did not seem to suit his game and the youngster was a quite easy victor in 35 minutes, dropping juft 11 points. Davenport hit some lovely winners in the first game, which lasted only 8 minutes, and Rush only came into con-

lenuon uuring the third game, when he pulled back a three-point deficit to level at 5-5. There was a great rally at 7-7 with Rush retrieving well but Davenport eventually took that point and then wasted no time in taking advantage of his .first match ball. But the major upset of the day was the achievement of the Suburbs No. 1, Les Plever. who took the Frank i Creighton “player of the week” award for an astounding win over the Canterbury champion. Rod Hayes \ (Christchurch I). Plever has had only two wins in inter-club this season and managed only 'five points when he met Hayes in the first round of the Canterbury championships last Friday. Hayes was reluctant to volley and Plever was still reasonably fresh in the fifth, where from 4-4 he won six successive rallies, most from crisply-hit nick shots set up by Hayes. The Christchurch player lost the second after leading, 8-3, and the fourth after leading, 4-0. Christchurch surprisingly lost the over-all contest with Suburbs as Max Morrison beat Neville Idour, 3-0, and Murray Carson, driving low and hard, had a creditable victory over Laurie Wilson. The second Christchurch team had an unexpected win over University, which was

without us ixo. 2, Barrie Matthews, and the fact that the top player, Paul McFadzien, dawdled a little with George Balani did not help matters either. The games were dad at 8-8 and Christchurch II won on a points count-back, 112-105. High School Old Boys had a clean sweep over Sumner to take third place in the Blank Trophy, the first of the two major competitions for the season. A feature was the return of the veteran, Les Milne, who during the game he took from John ’ French, played an immaculate re-verse-angle winner that he would love to know how to repeat. In the women’s game all the top players had wins although Lyn Chamberlain (Burnside) had her work cut out to beat Czesia Bowan (Christchurch III). Phillipa Lush (Christchurch I) celebrated her recovery from injury with a 3-0 defeat of Loma Symes (Christchurch II), whose deep Fiji-acquired tan made everyone else look deathly white by comparison in the chilly atmosphere. Points:—
