Abortions delay other cases

PA Wellington The Wellington Hospital Board is looking for a suitable abortion facility and staff to run it. This was decided by the board’s house committee after it heard that the increasing number of abortions being performed at Wellington and Hutt hospitals was delaying other gynaecological and obstetric cases. The acting medical superintendent (Mr B. Corkill) told the committee that 58 abortions were done in Wellington and Hutt hospitals in May. There was a waiting list of between 250 and 350 gynaecological and obstetric cases. Urgent operations were being done as usual, but non-urgent cases were being delayed. Mr Corkill said the abortion figure of 58 in May compared with 41 in April, and it was estimated the figures would increase again this month.
