Tug-of-war takes toll
NZPA-Reuter Harrisburg (Pennsylvania) An attempt to break the world tug-of-war record ended in chaos yesterday when the rope snapped, injuring hundreds of the 2200 schoolchildren and adults involved. Sixty-three persons were taken to hospital. Most of them i.ad rope bums, but four lost fingers or parts
of fingers, hospital officials said. Up to 300 others were given first aid at the Harrisburg School, where the tug-of-war took place. The school principal, Dr Marshall Layton, said about 2200 adults and pupils had been tugging when the 3.Bcm rope broke. “It snapped like a rifle shot and everybody went sprawling,” he said.
