Ashe bows to Fairlie
NZPA Birmingham The New Zealander Brian Fairlie gave himself a special thirtieth birthday present by defeating the former Wimbledon champion, Arthur Ashe, of the United States, 6-1, 6-3, in the John Player tennis tournament yesterday. Fairlie led, 5-0, in the first set and Ashe attributed his rapid exit to an unprepared change from slow courts at the French championships to Edgbaston’s grass. In other second-round matches Jimmy Connors (U.S.) beat Steve Krulevitz (U.S.), 6-3, 6-0, John Newcombe (Australia) beat Vic Amaya (U.S.), 4-6, 9-8, 6-4 and Sashi Menon (India) beat John Alexander (Australia), 6-2, 6-3. New Zealand players entered in the Chichester tennis tournament won their first and secondround doubles matches yesterday. In the first round Malcolm Elley and Peter Hampton beat M. Holland (G. 8. and S. Alger (Bermuda), 3-6, 6-3, 8-6. Gary Slater, partnered by W. Davies (G. 8. beat R. Schnieder and J. Cohlberg (U.S.), 6-3, 7-5, in the second round.
