Taringa Bay qualified to start in the Rangiora Winter Cup on Saturday when he came with a true stayer’s run to win the W. A. Craddock Handicap at the Marlborough club’s meeting yesterday. His win came after a second at Ashburton and two thirds at the recent Nelson meeting.
In spite of those efforts he was allowed to pay a false win dividend of $12.05. He is Unlikely to be at such a long price at Rangiora on Saturday, which will be his| last start before he goes for; a well-earned rest.
Taringa Bay is raced in partnership by his Winton trainer, Harry Cox, and Mr Jack Cameron, of Auckland, for whom Cox prepares the; trotter, Colim. Mr Cameron) had an earlier winner in Clifford Bay, a half-brother to Taringa Bay, a hardy five-year-old, by Lord Butler. Copper Hanover was late working clear and she fin-1
i ished solidly for second in i what was her final appearance in the South Island. Hydro Byrd led for the last 800 m and battled on gamely for third, a length and a half away, with a similar break to the unlucky favourite, Master Regal, which was a shade slow and then badly checked after 200 m.
Master Regal was forced I three and then four wide as he tried to improve from the 700 m. Once properly clear he came on with a run which deserved a better fate. He will now be put aside for a short time. Armbro Rhythm was
given a splendid run by Max Miller, but he was late working clear and fifth was the best he could manage, ahead of Abbe Gold and Adomet. First Encounter was among those to lose their chance at the start. Prince Nugent added to a sound record when he fought on slightly better than Gentle Tag to win the Marlborough Transport Handicap. Gentle Tag raced to the front near the 900 m, with Prince Nugent improving sharply soon after. Prince Nugent and Gentle Tag were
together starting the run home, with the remainder starting to drop away. There was little between them over the next 200 m, but near the line Prince Nugent edged away to win ,by three parts of a length. Gentle Tag had no chance of losing second. He was nine lengths in front of the early leader, Katea Lad, with two lengths and half back to Ripper’s Image, which showed little dash. Captain Forver just battled on for fifth after having his chance, with Don Cortez and Robbie’s Talent at head of a badly beaten remainder.
