Churches call for repeal

PA Wellington The Presbyterian and Methodist Churches have thrown their weight behind calls for the repeal of the abortion laws. In an open letter to all members of Parliament sent by the Churches’ joint public questions committee, they describe repeal as the first step in the direction of enacting a “more humane law,” recognising the complex moral and human values involved in abortion debate. The Churches criticise the rush in which last year’s Contraception, Sterilisation. and Abortion Act was passed through Parliament and say that any new bill and all substan’ tial amendments should be referred to a select committee.
