Aust. markets ease
After the records set for the mining and all ordinaries indices on Tuesday prices eased for some of the leaders in trading on Australian stock exchanges yesterday, although coal stocks, the uraniums and selected industrials made gains. Overseas buying toned down overnight, and the local market was less enthusiastic — leading to an easing of prices which was compounded by some profit taking. Ort a turnover of 150,000 Western Mining dropped 3c to 166 c. North BH fell 6c to 140 c and C.R.A. was down 5c to 225 c. BH South caused a minor stir in Melbourne with a gain of 14c to 120 c, and a closing market of buyer 123 c and seller 150 c. Among the rises, Thiess put on 12c to 275 c, Coal and Allied gained 15c to 395 c, and Bellambi Coal rose 10c to 530 c.
BHP fell 10c to 710 c early, but recovered to close at 720 c. Bank of NSW eased 4c to 600 c and the retailer David Jones lost 4c to 125 c: Ansett rose 2c to 158 c after winning the court battle for control of Avis Rent-a-Car, Datronics gained 5c to 125 c on news of a big computer contract it won, and ICI rose a further 2c to 228 c.
