Premier changes mind
NZPA Brisbane The Queensland Premier (Mr Joh Bjelke-Petersen) did an about-face on the Torres Strait border issue yesterday when he announced he opposed a new border pact between Australia and Papua New Guinea.
The agreement yet to be ratified by the Australian and Papua New Guinea Governments settles a seabed resources border in the Tones Strait between the two countries. Several inhabited islands lying within Papua New Guinea’s area will become Australian enclaves, and three small uninhabited islands will become part of Papua New Guinea. Mr Bjelke-Petersen told a press conference in Brisbane I that he would not be recommending to Torres Strait islanders that they accept the new border agreement. The Premier said in a surprise announcement he had had time to read the “fine print” in the border pact and there was a number of aspects that needed clarification. He left for the is» lands yesterday and said he would take his objections to Canberra when he returned.
