$26M held in home savings
Parliamentary reporter : There were 16.728 home' ownership savings accounts 1 in force in New Zealand at the end of the last financial year. In answer to a question, by Mr B. E. Brill (National,■ Kapiti) the Minister of | Housing (Mr Holland) told Parliament that 11,916 of these were ordinary accounts worth almost 519.5 M. and 4812 were special accounts worth more than S7M. “They are held approximately in these areas: In the trustee savings banks. 5612 ordinary accounts and 2415 special accounts; in the ! building societies, 312 ordinary accounts and 193 sped cial accounts; and in the Post Office, 5983 ordinary L accounts and 2204 specia'l i accounts.” Other answers given by , Mr Holland last week in the House were:— “The amount of arrears and the percentage of Housing Corporation tenants in i

As I the likely response to the scheme was difficult to assess at the time it was introduced I have kept all aspects of it under review. “The number of loans approved by the Housing Corporation for the year ended March 31, 1978, at the rates of interest quoted were as follows.— 3 per cent: 1665. of which 1456 were to build (new homes, and 209 w-ere ■for buying homes; 5 per cent: 1588 (1402 and 186); 16.5 per cent and 989 (877 land 112): 8.5 per cent: 7914 (3252 and 2395). “On present planning, it is expected that the Housing Corporation will move in and open for business to the public in its new building in Wiri, South Auckland, in early April, 1979.”
