Solo sailor wrong sex for club

NZPA-AP New York She is not "a man of good stgture,’ and so Naomi Tames, who set a record last week in a solo voyage around the world, has been denied admission to the elite Circumnavigators' Club. New Zealand-born Mrs James, who sailed almost 30.000 n miles in 272 days in her 16m sloop Express Crusader, did not apply for membership in the New York-based club. Triston Jones, a Manhattan explorer who is said to have sailed around the world three times, asked the club to invite Mrs James to join. He was quoted in the ‘ New York Post” as saying he was disgusted and surprised to team of the club’s rule barring women. He would withdraw his own application for membership because of the rule. Mr Jones saio that Mrs James's voyage had been an arduous one and that he had sent her a telegram which said. “You have done more for women than all the protests ever.”

Oliver Smart, the club’s first vice-president, said that the 71-year-old club would vote in January on the admission of women; “I am all for it. particularly for a fellow New Zealander.” He believed that the 1000member club would agree with him. ,
