Sir, —After watching this afternoon’s (Sunday, June 11) wrestling bout in Auckland between Steve Rickard, Jack Claybourne and the “Animals,” I reached the point of utter exasperation at the continued absence of competence in referees. Steve Rickard had his opponent pinned for a count of 6, but where is the referee? He is spending an unnecessary amount of time reprimanding Jack Claybourne (with his back to the wrestling action, which is surely what he is supposed to watch) who is only coming into the ring because of the illegal entrance of the untagged opponent. After watching wrestling for weeks it appears that referees only look for the “good guys” to reprimand and let the “animals” get away with every illegal trick in the book. I suggest that the film of this afternoon’s bout be shown to the referee and all other referees of professional bouts this year. They might get the message. — Yours, etc. R. ELLINGFORD.
