Fashion’s failure
Tne average British male on the average British beach is seemingly dea." to scathing criticism of his attire, writes John Ross, from London. They still wear knotted handkerchiefs, rolled-up l>aggy trousers supported by braces, short socks with their san als, and crumpled shirts (a slightly modified version is pictured). The criticism came from the Clothing Manufacturers’ Federation, which found in a survey that women were “shamed and
embarrassed” at their husbands’ lack of dress sense on the average British beach. Some of the comments from the women surveyed: “He’s given me nightmares when we’ve gone away. Sometimes I have refused to go out with him.” “The idea of dressing up . holiday sounds crackers to my husband. All the British male wants when he goes away is sjun, sex, and sand.” My fiance regards a
holiday as time for boozing and bathing. He certainly doesn’t think good clothes are important.” The federation’s chairman (Mr H. Wilkinson) said no-one was suggesting that men on holiday should war nothing but formal suits, but the range of smart leisure clothes is now infinite. “There is no earthly reason why' men should subject their wives to this annual bout of humiliation,” he said.
