University keeps hockey lead with two good wins
University kept its twopoint lead in the senior men’s hockey table with two convincing wins at the week-end.
Two rounds were played to catch up on lost days earlier in the season. Next week’s games will complete the first full round of the competition. Redcliffs continued its good form and two wins put it clear in second place.
High School Old Boys, previously in equal second with Redcliffs, dropped to third when it drew with Linwood United.
Selwyn-Hillmorton scored in the last 30s against Harewood for a 1-1 draw and Sydenham-Cashmere scored a late goal to beat a determined but luckless Woolston Working Men’s Club. Ha re wood, with a win and a draw, took three valuable points to reach equal fourth place but it played one more game than Selwyn.
Saturday results:-— Redcliffs 3 (A. Ineson), Sel-wyn-Hillmorton 2 (J. Pepper, G. Carnoutsos). Sydenham-Cashmere 2 (A. Black S. Ambler), Woolston W.M.C. 1 (R. Timlin). Harewood 2 (R. Agent, R. Pettit), Pegasus 0. University 7 (B. J. Maister 3, C. G. Maister 3, S. G. Maister), Linwood United 1 (R. Parry). Sunday results:—
University 3 (S. G. Maister 2, C. G. Maister), Sydenham-Cash-mere 0. Harewood 1 (B. Bhana), Sel-wyn-Hillmorton 1 (J. Pepper). High School Old Boys 1 (G. Ross), Linwood United 1 (H. Singh). Redcliffs 3 (A. Ineson, I. Jackson, L. Munt), Pegasus 1 (H. Griffin). Points:—
University was easily three goals better than Sydenham in a game hampered by a muddy circle at one end and too much whistle from, the umpires when the advantage rule would have allowed the game te flow a little better.
University dominated the game, but many attacks foundered on some splendid defence i by Murray Peacock, at centre ! half and the full-backs. Ross Ambler and Bevan Hall. The Sydenham forwards could not make the same use of the large amount of ball they had and
their attacks inevitably ended with a University counter-attack. Chris Maister scored the first goal after lOmin from a penalty corner. In spite of many promising moves and penalty corners, University could not add to its score and Sydenham almost equalled from a well struck Ross Ambler penalty corner. It was not until the last lOmin that University made its position safe with two penalty strokes from Selwyn Maister. The first was awarded after a shot struck a Sydenham defender on the goal line and tlie second for breaking at penalty corners after repeated warnings from the umpire. LATE EQUALISER
After applying heavy pressure to the Harewood defence in the final lOmin, Selwyn was rewarded with a goal 30sec from the end. It was the fifth of a series of corners and Jeff Pepper struck the ball well into the far corner of the net.
Harewood had its chances and only minutes before had missed scoring. Balvant Bhana broke into the circle on the right of the goal, moved towards the back line, and passed to Bruce McLean on the left goal-post. But he mis-trapped and the ball was cleared.
Harewood showed more drive on attack than in recent weeks. Bhana, nursing a leg injury, scored Harewood’s goal from a penalty stroke early in the second half.
PEGASUS FALTERS Pegasus lost all purpose in the second half against Redcliffs and allowed the latter to score two I field goals for a comfortable win. In the first half Pegasus had showed dash but after the interval the forwards neglected their back tackling, which was essential to keep pressure on Tony Ineson, the Redcliffs centre-half.
Ineson scored the first goal from a penalty corner but Hugh Griffin equalised. Redcliffs countered with attacks that severely tested the Pegasus defence and eventually a cross from the right found Leo Munt, who scored. A few minutes later lan Jackson dribbled to the back line on the left of the goal and from an acute angle shot the ball past Paul Wayman. PLAY DROPS AWAY
Old Boys tainted a good firsthalf performance with some mediocre defence in the second which eventually led to its downfall.
The Old Boys forwards attacked from the start and got their onlv goal after lamin when Gerald Ross picked up a loose ball in the circle to score.
In the second half Linwood played its right flank attack and Old Boys seemed content to keep the play on that side of the field. Its defence was strong but it made some mistakes which led to several penalty corners. Henrv Singh scored from one of these. REDCLIFFS HOLD ON Selwvn-Hillmorton had a 2-1 lead at half-time against Redcliffs but it could not compete with Tony Ineson’s penalty corners in the second half. He scored) two to add to one he had scored' in the first half. Selwyn missed two key play-; ers. Mark and Craig Burtt, but still worried Redcliffs. It was
only good covering by Neil Coster that prevented Selwyn from scoring in the second half. Redcliffs was unfortunate not to score three times in the last few minutes: each time an easy shot at goal was muffed. RUSH OF GOALS Linwood crumpled under pressure from University in the second half of their match and conceded six goals, all scored by the Maister brothers, Barry, Chris, and Selwyn. Barry Maister also scored the only first-half goal, Linwood did well to hold University in the first half. In the first lOmin Rodger McHarg, in the University goal, was called on to save or clear three times. Midway through the half Linwood suffered a blow when its best forward, the inside right, Darryl Small, had to leave the field with a muscle injury. His loss took vital drive and direction out of the Linwood attack. University was denied another goal when the half-time whistle blew as the ball was being struck into the net. CLOSE CALL Woolston scored the first goal] against Sydenham when Russ| Timlin picked up a pass from' Steve Cox. '
i-| Sydenham must have been wori(ried by the stern defence it met from Woolston but eventually 11 Steve Ambler equalised when he t ran on to a pass near the tQP . iof the circle and hit the ball at 1 full speed past a bewildered de-, , fence. Woolston lost some of its ad-j vantage in the second half when < j the gap between its forwards 1 and halves widened. enabling! Sydenham to intercept mans i ’ passes. ; Sydenham attacks late in the L game forced several penalt> | corners. With two minutes re-j ’ maining Alan Black managed to ' control a rebound from one of these to slip the ball into the| 1 net. DRAB GAME ' Harewood took a valuable two ’ points against Pegasus but its ; performance was not convincing. : Royden Agent, at inside right, ’ scored the first goal after irtnin when he guided in a cross from ‘ the right wing, Wayne Seebeck. > Pegasus mounted some strong ; attacks but could not finish the ’ moves or several penalty corners it was awarded. Harewood’s attacks lacked 1 imagination but eventually Dick >' Pettit added a second goal when itthe ball came loose to him at I the edge of the circle.
