Win for Nelson

PA Wellington Two bad defensive errors let Nelson United return home with two points from a 2-1 win over Stop Out in a Rothmans Soccer League match at Lower Hutt yesterday. In a fast, entertaining game, the young Nelson team harried and fought well to outplay the Hutt side and thoroughly deserved both points despite a strong Stop Out revival in the last 20 minutes. Dave Powdrell scored after 15min when he dispossessed the Stop Out ’keeper, Barry Pickering, from a back pass, and Ken Cresswell was unmarked to head home Keith

McKay’s cross 3min before half-time.

Derek Gibson-Smith inspired a Stop Out revival with a thunderous volley into the net 20min from the end.

After being undefeated for five games, Wellington Diamond United was beaten, 2-1 by Hamilton in the week-end’s other league match at Muir Park, Hamilton.

Hamilton opened the scoring when the team’s recent acquisition, Mervin Henry, an 18-year-old West Indian, opened his goal-scoring account in New Zealand soccer.

W.D.U.’s Gary Paddison then scored, but Jeff Strom (W.D.U.) conceded an owngoal near the end.
