Affirmed wins Triple Crown

NZPA New York Affirmed regained the lead from his arch rival, Alydar, half way down the Belmont straight and went on to win the 110th Belmont Stakes by a head and become the eleventh horse to capture America’s Triple Crown of racing on Saturday. In a memorable duel, Affirmed held the lead, yielded to Alydar and then overcame the Calumuet Farm colt as they raced neck and neck in the final few furlongs with Steven Cauthen edging his horse ahead by a head at the line.

Affirmed thus duplicated Seattle Slew’s feat last year of winning the coveted Triple Crown. Saturday’s triumph by the three-year-old son of Exclusive Native marks the first time that two horses had ever won the Triple Crown—the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness, and the Belmont Stakes—in consecutive years.
