Chch teams in cold

No teams from Christchurch are among the eight which have qualified for the Hanes New Zealand women’s basketball championship, which will be held in Cowles Stadium from June 27 to July 1. The two leading Christchurch club sides, Checkers and Mairehau, failed to reach the final of the South Island ctampionship last week-end. Their only chance of late inclusion is if one of the qualifiers elects to withdraw. However, this seems unlikely, in spite of the considerable cost which the competing clubs face. Akarana Y.M.C.A. (Auckland) and Hadleigh Homes (Napier) are likely to be given the top two rankings. Y.M.C.A. won the championship in 1975 and 1976, and was also a qualifier last season. Hadleigh Homes is the defending title-holder. The two South Island qualifiers are Tennis (Nelson) and Otago University. The other teams are Club 77 (Hamilton), Marist Central (Wellington), and Greenbay Stealers (Hamilton).
