Board optimism after April trade rise

Lyttelton’s trade got a substantial boost during April, which port authorities hope will be the beginning of a recovery from the heavy losses suffered earlier in the [year.

The port’s trade for the seven months to April 30 was 16 per cent down on the previous year but if April’s performance is any indication this deficit should be reduced to about 12 per cent by the end of the year, says the Lyttelton Harbour 'Board’s general manager (Mr J. A. McPhail). Mr McPhail said this week that 150.000 tonnes was : handled in April compared ■with 114,000 tonnes last year, an increase of more than 30 per cent. The increases were mainly in the form of petroleum products and increased general cargo exports. “If the trend continues, we will finish the year only 12 per cent down — on a par with other New Zealand I ports,” he said. I Increases were expected 'particularly from petroleum 'products and in the coastal motor-vehicle trade, said Mr McPhail. “At the moment, overseas 'imports are down drastically but this should improve con-

siderably with the start of the import-licensing year in July.” ARRIVALS Botany Chemist (7.45 a.m.), 3421, Tauranga (Scales). Wild Fulmar (7.27 a.m.), 5014., Auckland (Scales).
