Geese shoot off

PA Oamaru A big goose shoot on Lake Benmore may have been sabotaged by a flying bird-lover. More than 300 shooters recently converged on the Ahuriri arm of the lake to help clear big flocks of Canada geese that were damaging nearby crops. However, a plane from the Upper Waitaki Areo

Club at Twizel beat them to it. It flew over the area the night before apparently to take photographs, and scared the flocks away. In the morning, the 300 shooters could bag only 11 birds. The Waitaki Valley Acclimatisation Society, which organised the shoot, and attracted shooters from more than 500 km away, will lodge a complaint with the Civil Aviation Division.
