Unemployment
Sir, —During a radio comment (June 7) on the planned construction of hostels at Q.E. II Park, a City Council official told his interviewer that-he hoped to use “unemployed labour” on the work and, by doing this, halve the costs. I had the uneasy feeling that at last the economic miracle had arrived. Then I began to wonder how much longer we must all continue to pay the heavy social costs of unemployment and its attendant hardships just to raise a smug smirk on the face of yet another accountant obsessed, with “balancing the books.” —Yours, etc., JACK CORNHILL. June 8, 1978.
