Two-wheeled salute

Cyril Fox lived for motor-cycles. But at 52. more than twice the age oi many bikies who attended his funeral yesteiday, he died in a collision between his motor-cycle and a car in Lincoln Road last Wednesday evening. “He was one of us and a damned good friend and family man too,” said one bikie who knew him as a

long-standing friend and associate member of Christchurch’s Epitaph Riders. “We wanted to give him a good send-off,” he said. More than 40 motorcyclists from throughout the South Island mingled

yesterday with conventionally dressed mourners at the Mineral at the Canterbury Crematorium in Linwood Avenue, while rows of motor-cycles, specially shined as a mark of respect, were parked outside.

Among the wreaths was one carried on a motorcycle by the group which had travelled the furthest — the ‘Lost Breed,* from Nelson. There were other wreaths former bikies — long since turned into quiet

family men — who had I ridden with Cyril Fox over the years. “There are all kinds of people here, because everybody liked Cyril,” , said one patch-wearing rider. When they had paid their last respects and shuffled silently out of the chapel, the motor-cyclists roared off in convoy to a city address for the ‘wake.’
