Goat cull delay urged

The Arapawa Island Wildlife Trust is grateful for the decision by the Forest Service to delay the culling of goats in the central section of the island until January. The secretary of the trust (Mr A. A. Adcock) said that the Marlborough Maritime Park Board’s decision to have a controlled kill of goats on re-

serves on Arapawa Island was “the best the trust could have got from the board.” However, the trust would also like to see the culling of goats on all parts of the island, not only the central section, delayed for six months. “This will allow time for the kids to be weaned from the nannies before

the shooting begins,” Mr Adcock said. “Otherwise, the adult goats will be killed, leaving the kids to die of starvation.” A delay of six months would also allow the trust rime to try to raise enough money to buy land that could be used as a sanctuary for the goats, he said.
